Ronald Frost

April 24, 1952 — February 22, 2022

Hancock - Hi, I’m dead. I’m not merely dead, I'm really most sincerely dead. It’s important to not be too cautious in life. If you obey all the rules you miss a lot of fun – rather in the end, slide in sideways with a glass of Jack in one hand and a Fender Jazz in the other shouting, what a wild ride!

Ron was born in April 1952 in Bar Harbor and graduated from MDI High School in 1970 as one of the first graduating classes (despite breaking the dress code with his long hair and constantly getting kicked out because of it). It is of no surprise that Ron would leave us on a palindrome day. “TWOSDAY”, 02/22/2022. Life was not easy but it sure was interesting. He was proud of being a Bar Harbor boy. Making and listening to music was vital to Ron, but saving three barns on the island was something to be proud of too. He truly regretted he was unable to save Hamilton’s Hill or the Casino but starting Hulls Cove General Stores with his first wife, Dana was a challenging and exciting adventure. It pleased him to see it still going. The Casino was a grand old building on the corner of Cottage and Bridge Streets in Bar Harbor. Ron was pissed when they tore it down, he still is! One of the first bands he was in, The Paragons played at a high school dance at the Casino, later his grandfather, Cack Frost told him he had stood outside listening. “Pappa was a terrific honkey-tonk piano player. He played the Way-back Balls, The Pot and Kettle Club and the Hayseed Ball”. It meant a lot to Ron that Pappa had stood outside on a dark corner listening to his grandson play Rock n Roll. He was immensely proud to be a part of the Bar Harbor Drum and Bugle Corp with his uncles and friends like, Sully. He knew the history of the Bower drums, (Bar Harbor having one of only two complete sets in the USA) and he learned the Bower method of Drumming.

Ron is survived by his wife, Valerie (the former Miss Grindel of Albert Meadow notoriety) along with the remnants of the Grindel Tribe: James (Jane), David (Martha), Brenda,Scott, Frank (Wendy), Joe (Darcy). His son Jamie and Jamie’s Mom Sonja. His wonderful sister, Kate Gott and her awesome husband, Frank. Their offspring, Curtis and wife Lindsay and their wonderful kids - Natalie and Lincoln: Albert and Lindsey and their children, Bryson, Addelynn, Q, and Julio.

He also leaves behind Uncle Rod Curtis and Uncle Bob Frost, many aunts and cousins on both the Frost and Curtis sides of the family. Including, Aunt Pat Curtis, and the Curtis cousins, Mike, Jeff, and Matt. Amazing Aunt Althea and her charming husband Peter Higgins, Jet-setting cousins Alicia and Victor Mellow. And of course all of the Thomas’s! Dear friends David Lewis, Diana MacDowell, James Leathers, Ali-Cat Bierman and the Bierman’s of Heather Lane. Wonderful neighbors Don and Linda, Elizabeth and Morag. I can’t forget to mention his internet friends on Second Life and Skype. The Tennessee Squires – he was pleased to be one. I know I’m missing important people and more important dogs too, forgive me.

Ron was predeceased by his father, Dick Frost and mother Jean Curtis (she often introduced herself as the former Mrs. Frost). She was a wonderful mother and knew how important music was to Ron. She once got him tickets to see (and HEAR) Cream when they played at the Tea Party in Boston, BOTH nights! He went on stage after the show and took some of EC’s broken guitar strings – he still has them! Thanks, Mom. I can’t forget to mention what a clever wordsmith Ron was, Valerie has a vast collection of his poems. His wealth of knowledge of Bar Harbor history and the island was phenomenal and he always had interesting tales to tell.

There will be a graveside service at a later date at Ledgelawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please donate to Friends in Action (FIA) or a similar organization. Ron often used FIA for transportation to medical appointments so Valerie didn’t have to take a day off from work. The executive director of FIA is Jo Cooper (Dunlap) she is a friend and school chum of Ron’s.

Please see the Brookings-Smith website for additional information. The cost of obituaries in newspapers are astronomical so I tried to be brief but there is more to say. Anyone can contribute with stories and memories of Ron to Brookings-Smith. Please be kind, I loved him in spite of his imperfections and we all know he didn’t always do the right thing!

“He was my North, my South, my East and West My working week and my Sunday rest. My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song….” – W.H.Auden

A graveside service will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 4, 2022 at Ledgelawn Cemetery, Bar Harbor, Maine
