BANGOR - Ronald J. Strout, 87, husband of Sarah “Sally” (Palmer) Strout, died peacefully at his home with his family by his side on August 13, 2022. He was born in Houlton, July 3, 1935, the son of Willard Jerome Strout and Dorothy (Lovely) Strout. Ron was raised by his father and Ethel (Dow) Strout after the early passing of his mother.
Ron was raised in Houlton and worked summers for the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad throughout his high school years. During the summer of 1953, after he graduated from Ricker Classical Institute in Houlton, he moved to Bangor and continued working for the railroad followed by a couple of summers with Bangor Hydro-Electric Company.
Upon graduation from the University of Maine in June 1957, Ron began his career with General Electric. After one month with GE, he reported for active duty with the U.S. Army. His eventual assignment was to the Ordinance Guided Missile School in Huntsville, Alabama where the booster rocket design assisted the early development of NASA.
In the late 1950’s, Ron met Sally Palmer and they were married on July 2, 1958, in Bangor. They recently celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary this past July.
Following his service with the Army, Ron and Sally moved to Syracuse, New York in June 1959, where he continued a long career with General Electric. At GE, Ron worked on television technology as it evolved from vacuum tubes to cathode ray tubes and semiconductors. This included several international business trips to Japan, Taiwan, China, Singapore, and the Soviet Union. The TV business thrived and expanded to southeastern Virginia, where Ron and Sally raised their two children, Douglas and Stephen. Following his career with GE, Ron worked for E-Systems (now Raytheon) and after he retired, was employed by LL Bean in Maine.
Upon retirement in 1994, Ron and Sally moved back to Bangor, Maine where Ron enjoyed a life of retirement focused on his favorite hobbies including family genealogy research, reading, and gardening.
In addition to his wife, Sarah (Sally), Ron is survived by his sons, Douglas Strout and his wife, Mary Beth McLeod; Stephen Strout and his wife, Anne Strout; as well as five grandchildren, Mallory, Carson, Catherine, Paige, and Norah, and one great grandchild, Henry.
