Rosalie (Fleisher) Shapero, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, December 4th, 2022. She was born on September 17, 1923, in Philadelphia, the youngest of six children of Morris and Sophie (Fliederman) Fleisher, the only one born in the United States.
After meeting her future husband, Dr. Benjamin L. Shapero, on a blind date in Philadelphia, she married and moved with him in 1944 back to his hometown in Bangor, Maine, where she helped build a wide-reaching pediatric practice that served generations of Mainers. So supportive of her Dr. Ben, she occasionally answered the phone at night after he went to bed. Family and community were the pillars of her life, as she was the proud mother of two children, Paul Shapero and Suzanne (Shapero) Kirschner, and an active member of the Jewish community through her synagogue, Congregation Beth Israel, and other civic organizations. A consummate hostess, she showed her love for people through food, often never stopping to sit down in her own seat. No one ever went away hungry from her table.
Denied privileges at the local social clubs, she helped establish the first country club to admit Jewish members, which eventually became the Lucerne Country Club. She was a long-time volunteer at the Penobscot Valley Medical Auxiliary, as well as in the Morselife Communities of West Palm Beach, Florida.
She is survived by her daughter, Suzanne Kirschner and husband Fred, son, Paul Shapero and wife Jane; five grandchildren, Jodi Steel, Lisa Kirschner, Alex, Kayle, and Mara Shapero; as well as by five great-grandchildren, Brooke and Jack Steel, Jake and Eitan Shapero, and Zoey Shapero.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Wednesday, December 7, 2022, at the Jewish Chapel, 118 Center Street, Bangor. The service will livestreamed at https://my.gather.app/remember/rosalie-shapero. Interment will follow at Beth Israel Cemetery, Bangor.
