Rose Marie Fisher died Thursday September 29, peacefully at home, of complications of Covid and Altzheimer’s disease. She was born in Ft. Fairfield, August 6, 1938, daughter of Aubrey Laurence Lovely and Edna Louise Kinney Lovely. She was delivered by the famous Dr. HC Kimball, who also delivered all of her six siblings: Bob, Dick, Clayt, Leo, Betty and Glynn. After the separation of her family, she was raised by an aunt and uncle, Lois and Albert Kinney of Brooks.
After graduation from high school Rose went to Belfast to work as a hairdresser with Patty Patten (later Lord) who was her matron of honor and lifelong friend. She also became fast friends with the Starretts of that town and in later years would often visit them in their summer cottage at the Battery. Through her brothers she met Jerry Fisher of Fort Fairfield, at that time a potato farmer. They were married in 1959 and stayed that way until Jerry’s death in 2019.
After the sale of the farm Jerry went into construction and the young family moved around a bit, acquiring two sons as they went. Eventually they settled in New Hampshire, at first in Hampton and later in Newfields. Their house with its big back yard and gardens hosted many family gatherings. Rose went back to school, earning an associates degree in library science and working at Lane Memorial Library in Hampton. Over the following years she also worked as an antiques dealer, part owner of a paint store, and one half of the Incredible Women cleaning company with eternal best friend Leslie Metzger.
After Jerry’s retirement from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, the family purchased a farm in Winterport, Maine. They started attending farmer’s markets, at first with baked goods (Rose was good with sweets) and later organic produce and flowers. Rose was a founding member of the Bar Harbor Farmers’ Market and was a vendor there, with son Joe, for many years. At home she baked an enormous volume of flaxseed crackers and worked tirelessly in the flower fields. Eventually she retired from active marketing but continued to make flower bouquets for market for years afterward, often working with her great friend Donna Grech.
Rose was bright, kind, resilient, and determined, with great strength of character. Her many nieces and nephews remember her as a loving presence and for some a second mother. She loved to laugh and dance, enjoyed a glass of wine and a good book, cared deeply, and was a devoted friend. She and Jerry loved to travel and often went to exotic places with good friends Mike and Maggie Comer. She also loved to spend time with her friend Kelly Comer Dionne and her husband Mike and children Jasper and Melina of Thorndike, who wrote her kind letters all through the pandemic. In later years she and Jerry attended St. Gabriel’s in Winterport where she was a well loved congregant for many years. After Jerry passed she often attended services with her good friend Joan Bowman.
