Rosemarie Margarete (Schoring) Blanke, 85, passed away peacefully at Eastside Rehabilitation in Bangor, on December 4, 2020. She was born June 11, 1935, in Hellingen, Thuringia, Germany, the daughter of Alfred and Helma (Spindler) Schoring.
In 1941, her father, became manager of the municipal dairy in the nearby city of Coburg (in the state of Bavaria, which put the family just on the western side of the Iron Curtain after 1945. Rosemarie (or “Rosi” to family and friends) graduated from Gymnasium Alexandrinum in Coburg, attended business school, and worked for some years as a secretary for the Federal Border Police. In 1959, she married Richard Blanke, an American soldier, and accompanied him to California where she worked as a machine bookkeeper in San Francisco. She loved her time in San Francisco often referring to it as the most beautiful city in the world. She moved to Maine in 1969, when her husband took up a position at the University in Orono. When Rosi’s sons (Friedi and Roman) were young it was usual for women to stay home with the children while their husbands worked. Rosi was an exceptional mother who cared deeply for her family and ensured that every child who crossed her threshold was safe, healthy, and happy. She enjoyed baking, handicrafts, picturebooks, music, and telling stories of anything that reminded her of growing up in post war Germany. After divorcing in 1976, she relocated to Portland where she worked for the Portland Coalition and volunteered for the Portland Symphony Orchestra club, as well as being a member of her church group. Throughout the years Rosi always remained a loving, devoted mother to her sons and later a proud, generous grandmother. She loved living independently but had a big heart for those close to her. Sadly, in 2005 Rosi suffered failing health which forced her to take up residency in an assisted-living facility in Bangor, where her sons (and a caring daughter-in-law) made sure she was never without loving family support.
Rosmarie is survived, and will be sadly missed, by son, Friedrich and wife, Sheryl (Arthurs) of Glenburn; by daughter-in-law, Gina Platt of Seal Harbour, ME; by grandchildren, Gerald Blanke of Studio City, CA; Brianna Blanke of Saint Johns, FL; Marena Blanke of Bangor, ME and Theodore Blanke of Bangor, ME. She was predeceased by son, Roman Blanke of Bangor, ME. and sister, Annelore (Lolo) Schoring of Munich, Germany. The family wishes to give special thanks to the care givers (in particular Paula Eaton, who always had a lolly-pop for Rosi) at Eastside Nursing Home, who cared so consistently for Rosemarie during her declining years.
The family will hold a memorial service for Rosi at a later date, to be announced. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com
