Roy B. Payne, 86, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2023 at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor after a long illness. He was born February 13, 1937 in Rome, Georgia, the son of James Oscar and Louise (Tippen) Payne.
Roy served his country in the U. S. Air Force where he spent a majority of his time overseas. He retired after 20 years of dedicated service in maintenance and as a Training Instructor for 2 years. Roy returned to Hermon and started Payne’s Auto Body and Sales which he was proud to operate for 40 years. He particularly enjoyed meeting people and going to the car shows and auctions. Roy was a member of the Hermon Baptist Church since 1976 and served the church in many roles such as an usher and Deacon. He enjoyed attending church with his wife and singing many songs and hymns.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Joanna (Hanson) Payne; children, Tammy Lee (Payne) Nute and husband Gordon of Carmel, Tim M. Payne and wife Kimberly of Dayton, OH; grandchildren, Amanda, Brandon and wife Amanda, Tim Jr., Antonio; great-grandchildren, Destiny, Angelina, Dylan, Conor, Clayton, Natalie, and Jaylan; great-great grandchildren, Karson and Kairi; siblings, Clinton Payne of Rome, GA and Earl Payne and wife Diane of Covington, GA; special friends, Spencer and Sue Tracy, Debbie Falkenburg, and John and Elsie Boone. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a grandson, Zachary; and ten brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held, 3:00 PM, Saturday, June 17, 2023 at the Hermon Baptist Church, 2496 Route 2, Hermon with Rev. Garnett Chute and Pastor Scott Taylor, presiding. Friends may visit with the family from 2:00 PM until the service begins. Interment will be private for the family at Snows Corner Cemetery, Hermon.
