Royce Greene Wheeler

Royce G. Wheeler, 94, passed away peacefully October 10, 2020 at a local hospital. He was born September 1, 1926 in Bangor the son of Ernest D. Wheeler and Helen (Hanson) Wheeler.
Royce graduated from Higgins Classical Institute in 1944 and served in the US Navy as a radioman for two years, returning to Bangor at the end of WWII.
He worked for Maine Central Railroad for thirty-five years in supervisory positions, starting as a train dispatcher and retiring as Asst. Superintendent, East Sub-Division.
On May 23, 1948, he married Joyce A. Tasker in Stetson and they shared 72 wonderful years.
He was a much loved and respected 40 plus year member of the Hermon Baptist Church.
Royce was a member of St. Andrew’s Lodge #83 AF& M of Bangor, Lynde Lodge #174 AF&M of Hermon; a permanent member of the Grand Lodge of Maine; Active Emeritus 33rd Degree, Supreme Council AASR.
Royce was one of the principle founders of the Scottish Rite Children’s Dyslexia Center in Bangor. He was also very active in town affairs while living in Hermon.
Royce was predeceased by his parents; brother, Col. Bruce H. Wheeler; and son Robert R. Wheeler.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce T. Wheeler; daughter, Kathryn J. Blanchard; son Ernest D. Wheeler II and Linda George Wheeler; treasured granddaughter, Julie L. Dow; a very special great-grandson, Shayne N. Dow; brother, Harold A. Wheeler and wife, Deborah D. Wheeler; nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service to celebrate his life will be held 1 pm. Saturday, October 24, 2020 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Garnett Chute officiating. Relatives and friends are invited to call, 4 – 6 pm. Friday, October 23, 2020 at the funeral home.
