Russell Allen

February 1, 1940 — August 18, 2023

HERMON - Russell W. “Russ” Allen, 83, peacefully passed away August 18, 2023, at a Bangor hospital, with his loving family by his side. He was born in Presque Isle February 1, 1940, the son of Edgar and Peggy (Kelley) Allen.

Russ graduated from Presque Isle High School, Class of 1958 and continued his education at the University of Maine majoring in psychology. At the end of his junior year, he married his childhood sweetheart, Marilyn Barbour, also a student at UM. After graduation Russ served 2 years active duty in the Army, one of which he was deployed to Korea. He served in the Army reserves for the next 6 years.

After serving his country, Russell and Marilyn lived in Massachusetts for 7 years before moving their family back to Presque Isle, Maine where Russ enjoyed working with his father and ultimately took over the family farm which his great grandfather had begun in 1901. He farmed until 1983 but always maintained his great love for the land in the County. After his adventures in farming, he returned to college and obtained his degree in computer science in 1988 and worked in that field until his retirement from the Aroostook Medical Center in 2005. Five years ago, Russ and Marilyn decided to leave their home base in Presque Isle and move closer to their children and grandchildren in the Bangor area.

Russ will be forever lovingly remembered for his quick and dry humor and his infectious laugh. He always had a twinkle in his bright blue eyes and was almost always up to some kind of mischief. He was clever and determined. He loved to tinker and could fix most anything he set his mind to. He shared his love for hunting and fishing with his sons and grandsons. He enjoyed each of the many family adventures and has left a lasting legacy for his children and grandchildren.

He was diagnosed with PSP (progressive supranuclear palsy) several years ago and despite the debilitating disease, he faced his challenges with courage and determination.

Russ is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marilyn; his children, Albert and his wife, Denise, Brynn and her husband, Tim, and Mark and his wife, Lynn; 8 grandchildren, Joshua (Kim), Lindsey (Ryker), Chris, Emily, Amanda (Lance), Olivia (Ben), Mathew (Chloe) and Zachary; 2 great-grandchildren, Sophia and Rowen; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Carroll Allen and Jerry Mooney; and his sister, Alice (Mooney) Scolari.

Russ’ life will be honored at a service of remembrance at 10:00 a.m., Monday, August 28, 2023, at the Rock Church, 1195 Ohio St, Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments in the Rock Church, immediately following the service. A graveside service with military honors will be at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday August 29, at Central Maine Veterans’ Cemetery, 163 Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta, Maine.
