Russell Treadwell

March 7, 1934 — April 28, 2024

Carmel - Major Russell P. Treadwell left this world peacefully surrounded by his wife and family on Sunday, April 28, 2024. Born March 7, 1934, in Milford, Maine, Russell dedicated his life to service, family, and community.

With his beloved wife of more than 70 years, Christine (Noyes) Treadwell by his side, they raised three children, Russell "Rusty" Treadwell Jr., Steven Treadwell, and Melinda Treadwell. They have helped to support their children and contributed to the raising of their grandchildren, Jacob Treadwell, Ian Treadwell, Autumn Treadwell, Brittany Thompson, Camilla Sanz, Margo Morrissette, and Theo Morrissette. They also celebrated greatgrandsons, Corbin Thompson and the newest member of the family, Camden Treadwell.

Russell began his lifelong commitment to service and leadership when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1951, at the age of 17. During his highly decorated twenty-two-year military career, Russ served as a pilot in the U.S. Marine Corps receiving multiple awards including the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medals for heroic action against the Viet Cong in Vietnam. During his career he also served as Executive Officer for the Marine All Weather Attack Squadron 324, Marine Air Group 32, and the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort, South Carolina. Christine supported Russell and traveled the world volunteering and raising their three children.

Russ and Chris returned to Carmel, Maine, to restore the original Noyes' homestead following his military retirement in 1972. From that day forward, Russell dedicated many years of service and held leadership roles supporting the citizens of Carmel and the broader region and state. He was instrumental in the growth of Carmel Days and community pride. Served as the chair of the Carmel Republican Committee from 1984-2002, Chair of the Town of Carmel Board of Selectmen 1992-1997, Chair of the Carmel Recreation Committee 1978-1982, as a member of the School Administrative District 23 School Board 1983-1992, and as an elected State Representative for District #103 from 1996-2004. While he dedicated himself to volunteer service and leadership after his retirement from the Marine Corps, Russell also remained in the skies over Maine as President and Chief Pilot and Flight Instructor of C&M Aircraft Enterprise and as a Federal Aviation Examiner and a pilot supporting research across the state for fish, game, and agriculture. He proudly contributed countless volunteer hours to many civic organizations throughout his life including the Scottish Rite and Shrine, 1975-2024; American Legion, Post 107, 1973- 2024; Past Master Masons, Benevolent Lodge Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, 1974- 2024; the Retired Officer Association, 1976- 2024; and the Marine Corps Aviation Association, 1978- 2024.

Russell was predeceased by his mother, Angie E. Trott; his grandfather, Edwin Adorine; grandmother, Lyndal Martha (Smith) Treadwell; and numerous cousins. Throughout his life Russell was strength and calm counsel for all around him. Russ has been a lifelong partner, friend, protector, and confidant to his loving wife, Christine who will forever miss him. He also leaves his children and grandchildren and their spouses or fiancés, Lisa Treadwell, Samantha Treadwell, Tyler Martin, Patricia Treadwell, and Elise Morrissette, who will remain by Christine's side in the walk ahead without Grampie.
