Sally Day, 79, went to be with her Lord and Savior on January 14, 2022, passing from metastatic lung cancer. She was born on March 31, 1942 in Bangor, the daughter of Cecil and Violet Curtis. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 37 years, Harold Day.
Sally is also survived by her daughter, Lisa Whittemore and her husband, Jay of Oxford; her son, Rob Stevens and his wife Wendy of Carmel; and by four grandchildren, Brittney Turnbull of Bangor, Molly Stevens of Old Town, and Colby Stevens and Emily Stevens of Hot Springs, AK; two sisters, Roselle Berry of Ellsworth, and Jean Hutchings of Boise, Idaho; one great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by two brothers, Robert (Bobby) Curtis and Richard (Dicky) Curtis, and two sisters, Annabelle Hutchings and Carolyn Bragg.
Sally grew up in Bangor, attended Bangor schools, and took business writing classes at the University of Maine. She worked much of her professional life at Eastern Transportation Services in Bangor as a dispatcher and supervisor, and at the Lynx with Penquis Cap in Bangor as a transportation supervisor. Sally was known among her colleagues as a consummate professional; she led by example, holding others to high standards and treating everyone fairly and kindly.
She overcame breast cancer in her early-50s and developed progressive memory loss in her mid-70s. In the spring of 1999 Sally accepted Jesus as her personal savior; she loved God’s Word and lived her faith, and for many years prior to the decline of her memory, attended Calvary Chapel in Bangor and Orrington. Sally gave the best advice and the best hugs.
She loved camping weekly at the Fryeburg Fair and seasonally at Bayley’s Campground at Pine Point. She was an excellent cook, especially appreciated for her ‘Nana’s Oyster Stew’ prepared every Christmas, as well as for her ability to boil lobster and steam clams to perfection. More than anything, Sally loved being with family. She leaves behind a legacy of generosity, wisdom, and love.
A graveside service will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation at Komen.org
