- Sean P. Casey, 70, died after a long, courageous battle with cancer on July 9, 2020, at his home surrounded by family. Sean was born October 4, 1949 in Bangor, the son of George L. Casey and Dorothy P. (Waterhouse) Casey.
Sean graduated from Orono High School as a member of the Class of 1968. He then attended the University of Maine for one year before transferring to Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, where he earned a degree in Sociology. Sean made many lifelong friends in his time at Acadia University. He went on to pursue a Master’s Degree in Education at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida. During this time, he served as an assistant basketball coach at Jacksonville University.
After receiving his Master’s, Sean returned to Maine to the University of Maine at Machias (UMM) where he was the athletic director and men’s basketball coach. He and his team had many achievements at UMM. Sean’s greatest achievement, though, was not the many banners and games they won, but the relationships he had with his players. During his career, he went on to hold many other education positions across Maine in Jackman, Penobscot, Presque Isle, Acton, Washburn, and outside the state in Dickinson, North Dakota, and Shenzhen, China.
Sean was endlessly witty, compassionate, and thoughtful. Kennebunk Beach was his place and he greatly enjoyed books and music, especially Elvis, which brought him and his wife together. Although learning and basketball were Sean’s greatest passions, more than anything else, Sean loved people. Through his time as a player and student at Acadia University, coaching at Machias, and teaching and coaching around Maine and around the world, Sean made many deep, meaningful friendships. His time spent with family and friends was the most invaluable aspect of his life to him. He will be sorely missed by all those who had the luck and pleasure of knowing him.
In addition to his parents, Sean was predeceased by his brother, Michael Casey.
He is survived by his loving wife, Bridget (Lolar) Casey, his son, Darren Casey of South Portland, and his step-son, Ryan Lolar of Denver, Colorado. He is also survived by his sister, Cathy Casey of Delray Beach, Florida, and brother, Jack Casey and his wife, Diane of Glens Falls, New York. Three nephews, Andreas Galeati, Christopher Casey, Shane Casey and one niece, Courtney Casey.
Sean was loved and cherished by so many. He had so many teammates, players and friends that were a major part of his life. Due to the COVID-19 virus, Sean will have a private, Catholic service. However, once public health guidance allows for larger gatherings again, a Celebration of Life will be hosted for all of Sean’s family and friends to share memories, photos, and acknowledge the amazing life Sean lived. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Sean Casey Memorial Scholarship Fund at 4 Nash Street, Bangor, Maine 04401, which will provide scholarships to students at Orono High School in furtherance of Sean’s lifelong commitment to education.
