Serge L. Liros, 82, passed peacefully August 15th, 2023 at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Maine after failing to recover from a heart attack suffered on July 28th. He was born June 4th, 1941, in Glatz, Germany, the son of Lucas Akliros, an art and antiquities dealer, and Valentina (Blauberg) Elkan, a fashion illustrator.
After surviving World War II, Serge, his parents and younger brother Alex and older step-brother George were displaced to Greece because his father was considered a Greek national. Serge became a naturalized U.S. citizen after his parents immigrated to Brooklyn, New York in 1948 and his father opened the first Liros Gallery in New York. After a few years, his family moved to Munich, Germany where he continued in the American high school there. Unfortunately, his father Lucas suddenly died when Serge was 16. At 18, he joined the U.S. Army where he learned to be a medic. At the age of 22, he returned to Germany to help his mother with the art gallery in Munich and enrolled in German language classes. There he met his wife, Merrill (Pritham), of Greenville, Maine and Sun City Center, Florida, studying abroad. They were married on November 15th, 1963 in Munich, Germany and had their first daughter, Nicole while living there. After returning to the US in 1964, they lived in Washington, DC and Alexandria, VA and had three more children: Christina, Alexandra, and Sarah. They moved to Greenville, ME in 1982 and then Sargentville, ME in 1986. Following their divorce, Serge settled in Blue Hill, ME.
Serge opened his first art gallery in 1966, and he went on to operate a number of art galleries in Alexandria, Virginia and Blue Hill, Maine over his 56 years in the business. He truly loved art and it was his passion. When asked in an article, what makes you the happiest about living and working in the same building? He replied, “I love being surrounded by the art. I have all these beautiful pieces on the walls of my living space. And I walk downstairs to the gallery, and there’s even more. It gives me unending joy.”
He was also an avid sailor and skier and devoted father and grandfather and great-grandfather, who loved to spend time with family. He knew German, Russian and even a little Greek. He traveled to Europe many times in his life and loved visiting art museums there and in the US. He returned to his roots in Greece and found relatives there. He made friends everywhere he went.
He is survived by his daughters, Christina Akliros Pritham and her life partner Joseph Richards, Alexandra Liros, Sarah Vega-Liros and her wife, Janice, their son Jonathan Vega, and his son, Jedidiah Lee Schacht-Vega; his son-in-law, Jonathan Simms, his and Nicole's children; Dylan Lucas Simms and his wife, Laura (Weiskotten), and their daughter, Dahlia Nicole Simms; and Hannah Rose Deisinger and her husband, Jesse; his brother, Alexander Liros; his step-brother, George Liros, and his son, George Liros; all of his Akliros cousins in Buxtehude, Germany, and his special friend, Sally Littlefield, and many other friends who loved him dearly. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his daughter, Nicole Simms; his uncles Nikolas and Vladimir Akliros and aunt Ludmilla Blauberg (Australia).
