Brewer - Shawn Maurice McCue, 28, died unexpectedly from a severe seizure January 31, 2024. He was born May 24, 1995, in Belfast, Maine, to Eric McCue and Jennifer Carroll.
Shawn was a fighter from the birth, arriving into this world 18 weeks before his scheduled due date weighing just 1 lb., 12 oz. He spent 7 months in the hospital after birth. Born with cerebral palsy and a seizure disorder, he had many medical setbacks throughout his lifetime. But no matter what was thrown at him, he battled each one like the superhero he was! Shawn's medical needs were extensive from birth, which his mom, Jennifer, took care of admirably until it became too overwhelming. At that point the decision was made that Shawn would be cared solely by his dad, Eric. In 2005, Eric met Dallas Armstrong and she stepped in and provide something a single father couldn't, they built a mother/son bond.
Shawn attended Vine St. School in Bangor, Maine, and it was one of the best times in his life, in great part thanks to his teacher, Ron Provencher. In the Brewer school system, he was so lucky to work with an aid named Cindy Small, he always came home with a smile and a story to tell about Ms. Small. During the summer months, he would attend several summer programs, Camp Crazy Dazes, Camp Capella and Pine Tree Camp. He looked forward to every one of them, having countdowns all winter long for each one. Shawn loved school and was so proud the day he got to roll across that stage and accept his High School diploma from Ellsworth High School in 2015. He enjoyed attending Amicus Day Program in Bangor, where he made several friendships, especially his favorite staff, Michelle, who continued to provide Shawn unconditional support when he had moved on to a different program.
Shawn loved all things family, but his most favorite thing to do was to hop in the car and ride around with his best friend, Dad and listen to the radio, they needed no destination. His one big claim to fame was sharing a birthday with Bob Dylan. He would hang out for hours with Poppy asking him question after question about family history, he was obsessed with knowing everything about family and how he was related to each person. He would wait tirelessly by the mailbox for the next holiday card that he knew was coming from Grammie Shirley because she shared in the same insane love for all things holidays. He loved dressing up to go tricking or treating with his favorite cousin, Kenny, and going on car rides with family friend, Frank Richards, meant he would be back with a great story to tell! Upon finding out he was going to be an uncle he happily announced he will be called "Gruncle" (grumpy uncle), Remington and Raelynn loved their Gruncle Shawn. Shawn was the first to attend a family event, party or sporting event. He had this greater need to feel contacted to each and every person. You will never encounter another person with a bigger heart then Shawn.
Shawn is survived by his parents, Eric and Dallas McCue of Brewer, and Jennifer Carroll of Bangor; paternal grandparents, Kenneth McCue of Hermon, and Laura Gardiner of Brewer; maternal grandparents, Leon Armstrong and Pam Barker of Knox, and Eugene and Bernice Carroll Jr. of Greenbush; siblings, Sebastian and Elizabeth Peters, of Stoneham, Massachusetts, Lindsay Harford and Amy Lee, of Brewer, Logan Violette, of Old Town, and Jacob Harford and Kayla Smith; and nephew, Remington; niece, Raelynn, of Searsmont, and Rylee and Jack Conant of Oakland. He had many aunts and uncles, Chis and Kat, Karin and Jodie, Rebecca, Justine, Andy and Sharon, Elvis and Andria, and Angela; cousins, Raymond, Jonny, Miranda, Hannah and David, and many more; and many great-aunts, uncles and friends. Shawn was predeceased by his namesake, uncle, Shawn Carroll; maternal grandmother, Shirley; cousins, Kenny and Phil; aunts, Carol Gardiner and Tammy; his dog partner-in-crime, Buddy; and turtle, Franklin.
