Sondra Spencer

July 31, 1934 — July 25, 2023

Bangor - Sondra J. (McKusick) Spencer, 88, died unexpectedly but peacefully on July 25, 2023 surrounded by her loving family. She was born July 31, 1934, in Bangor, the daughter of George and Florence Sarah May (Urquhart) McKusick.

Sondra lived her entire life in Bangor; graduated from Bangor High School where she was captain of the women’s basketball team, member of the baton twirling team and very active in numerous school activities. She sang in the choir at her church for several years and worked as the secretary for Darlings Auto. She was a Girl Scout leader when us girls were young. She went on to help run Spencer Plumbing, a successful business that she and Dad built together. She also managed several apartment buildings that they owned, often buying groceries and Christmas gifts for their tenants that were falling on difficult times. Of everything she did, being a Homemaker was the job she was most proud of and she excelled at that in every way possible.

In April of 1955, she met the love of her life, Irving Spencer. They were engaged in May and married in June of the same year - it was love at first sight for the both of them. That was the beginning of their 68-year marriage and love story that lasted until the day she left us. The love, dedication and affection they showed for each other was an inspiration to all that know them. The many memories she and Dad created over the years live on in the lives of so many; young and old, friend or family. Fun events for all of the kids in the “old neighborhood”, summers at camp, family reunions and gatherings at their home of 47 years on Essex Street.

She loved her family deeply, and above all else. She devoted her entire life to her husband and three girls, as well as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had numerous nieces and nephews that she also loved with her whole heart. She was loved and adored by everyone for her kindness and generosity. She was loving, strong, wise; had a great sense of humor and will be deeply missed by all. She enjoyed gardening, painting, quilting, knitting, sewing, puzzles and spending time with family.

Sondra is survived by her husband, Irving F. Spencer; sister, Gloria Cameron of Florida; daughters, Dawn Conery and husband, Ed, Lynn Owen and husband, Brad, Gayle Craig and husband, Wayne; five grandchildren, Sandi Emmons Stahl, Tyler Emmons, Chad Tracy, Jason Leighton, and Cal Leighton; twelve great-grandchildren, Kamrynn, Ashlynn, Leighton, Sondra, Layne, Lexi, Jaslynn, Kayden, Spencer, Carson, Chase, and Paislee.
In addition to her parents, Sondra was predeceased by her brothers, Carl, Earl, Daniel, Neil, and Bruce; sisters, Nellie, Thursa, Phyllis, and Faith; and a very special son-in-law, Steven J. Leighton.
