Stanley Edward “Stan” Howard, 88, of Brewer, died on March 15, 2014, in Bangor, surrounded by family. He was born in Frankfort on February 25, 1926, son of the late Charles and Ethel (Tozier) Howard.
He grew up in North Searsport and graduated from Searsport High School in 1943. At 17, he volunteered for the U.S. Army and served in the infantry in the Germany and Austria during World War II. After the war, inspired by a favorite uncle, he graduated from Hanson’s Barber School in Bangor, and held a barber license from 1948 until his death.
He and his wife Barbara lived in Bangor until 1984, when they moved to Brewer. For 50 years, he was a well-known barber in Hampden and Bangor, retiring in 1998. During the 1970s, lean years for barbering, he also worked for a time at Sherman Homes and for several years at New England Pipe and F.W. Webb, before returning to barbering.
He was a faithful member and long-time trustee of Grace United Methodist Church in Bangor. He was a member of the VFW, and was proud of his WWII veteran’s walking stick. He was a past member and Noble Grand of the International Order of Odd Fellows in Hampden.
Stan was a warm and gregarious person who was deeply devoted to his family, loved people and enjoyed telling stories. Knowing his rare blood type could save lives, he donated many gallons of blood through the American Red Cross. In retirement, he volunteered over 3,000 hours at Eastern Maine Medical Center, where he enjoyed meeting people from all over eastern Maine. He loved the Red Sox, was an avid golfer who twice shot a hole-in-one, and enjoyed bowling with his friends at Family Fun Lanes in Bangor right up until the last days of his life.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Barbara (McCart) Howard, of Brewer; five children and their spouses, Judy & Luigi DiFilippo of Devon, Pennsylvania; Jerry & Diane Howard of Cherry Hill, New Jersey; Catherine & Arthur Terrill of Orono; James Howard and Lori Crow of Alexandria, Virginia; and Karen & Kevin Raye, of Perry; seven grandchildren, Rena Farris, Jeremy Howard, Stacey Atwood, Amy Cyr, Barry Terrill, Brandon Terrill and Joanna Howard; 16 great-grandchildren; and many treasured nieces, nephews and cousins.
