Stanley Joseph Plisga Jr., 78, passed away following a brief illness on February 14, 2022 at a Bangor hospital. Stan was born on March 28, 1943 in Waterville, the son of Stanley J. Plisga Sr. and Florence E. Plisga (Lachance). He graduated from Waterville High School in 1961 and went on to attend the University of Maine, Orono where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and Master of Science in Civil Engineering. While attending UMO, he met his wife Barbara. Stan and Barb were married on September 2, 1967 and together they traveled and lived life to the fullest while also pursuing their careers.
Stan started his professional career as an Instructor of Surveying at the University of Maine in the late 1960’s. He enjoyed teaching his many students. Many former students crossed paths with Stan later, fondly recalling his classes. In addition to teaching, Stan would work on private survey projects. He quickly realized his true calling was helping clients solve land and development issues by providing professional boundary, topography and engineering surveying services. In 1972, Stan teamed up with Richard (Dick) Day and formed Plisga & Day, serving Penobscot, Hancock, and Washington Counties in the state of Maine. This Plisga & Day team started small in 1972 and became incorporated in 1978 with six full time employees. Stan had a mathematical mind and quickly learned to program software that became the foundation of Plisga & Day’s office reduction of precise measurement work. His software programs are still used today by others to reduce their field measurements. Stan always put the client’s budget first and could intimately recall details of most of his jobs even 40 years later. Stan’s company fishing trips are legendary at Plisga & Day. Stan would travel to the Eagle Lake region of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway with 2 or 12, whoever wanted to go fish and freeze, at least once and often twice every spring for the best fishing in Maine. These trips went on for more than 30 years. Stan enjoyed the math challenges of surveying and continued to work up until this past December. Stan was kind and very supportive of his team. He is cherished by his colleagues and will be greatly missed by the 22 employees today and all those whom he had worked with over his 49 years at Plisga & Day.
Surviving Stan in addition to his wife, Barbara (Clukey) Plisga, are his sister Sheila Maxwell and her husband, Ron, of Winslow; sister Donna Plisga and her husband, Tony Lee, of Alaska; sister-in-law Cindy Embelton and her husband, Hubert, of Hermon and sister-in-law Gail Clukey, of Florida. Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Trisha Souviney and husband, Nick; Jason Maxwell and wife, Karrianne; Kirk Lewis, Stephanie Stewart, Nathan Lewis, Matthew Packard, Kristen Perry and husband, Ben. Jared Embelton and Jason Trask. Also surviving are Great nieces and nephews, Cooper, Bethany, Nixon, Jaclyn, Abbie, Jake, Kennedy, and Aubrey. Stan will also be fondly remembered and missed by many close friends.
