BANGOR – Stanley H. Small, 86, passed away April 28, 2015 at a Brewer health care facility. He was born December 16, 1928 in Harrington, Maine and was the son of Harry and Teresa Small.
Stan was born on one side of the Pineo Point Road and was raised on the other in a house his parents had built around the time of his birth. Stanley worked hard so he could go to normal school in Machias to become a teacher. His career as an educator took him from teaching in a two-room schoolhouse in Otter Creek to being the principal of the Teague Park School and later the Hilltop Elementary School in Caribou, and finally to being the director of student teaching at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. He did take a break early on to serve in the Army during the Korean War as a cryptographer, but other than that, his working life was devoted to education.
Stanley met the love of his life, Betty Millett, at the University of Maine at Orono. After a whirlwind courtship, their marriage went on to last 57 years until Betty’s death in 2011. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Nancy and Jerry Reed of Apopka, Fla,: daughter and son-in-law Ruth and Bob MacGregor of Belfast: daughter Sue of Litchfield, son and daughter-in-law Tom Small and Beth ByersSmall of Chester, daughter-in-law Terry Moulton of Linconville, four grandchildren Ben Reed, Jeff Reed, Karin Reed, and Anna MacGregor, sister Marion Dow of Ellsworth, sister-in-law June Fiske of Old Town and brother-in-law Sewell Millett of Fredericton, New Brunswick. In addition to his parents, Stan was predeceased by his son Jim in 2003, and brothers Lloyd and Kenneth. His family will miss Stan’s many stories.
Many of Stan’s favorite times were at the family camp. He loved fishing, hunting, playing cribbage, picking raspberries and watching his wife swim. He would not swim himself since his kids made fun of his pasty white chicken legs. He also enjoyed golfing, gardening and feeding the birds and squirrels. He was also a world-class couch-napper.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Woodlands Memory Care Unit for their kindness to Stanley in his last few months of life and Wanda at the Coach House Restaurant for teasing him at during his Saturday lunches out.
