Steven Libby, loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on March 22, 2024 at his home in Bangor.
Steve was born on January 20, 1954, in Bangor, to Vernon and Sherrill Libby. He grew up in Hermon, graduating from Hermon High School in 1972.
Steve met his wife, Rhonda, when they were both students at Hermon High School. They later married in 1973, and raised three children, Amanda, Justin, and Ashlee. Over their nearly fifty years of marriage, they had many adventures. They especially loved weekends at Old Stream, Sunday morning cribbage games, and day trips to the coast.
Steve’s work ethic was unparalleled. As a young boy, he spent summers picking produce with his brother, Brian, for a few dollars a day. Later, in his teens, he worked at his uncle’s greenhouse. Then, when he began working as a carpenter’s apprentice, he found his calling and life’s work. Over the years that followed, he refined his craft as a carpenter and general contractor, and in 1979 he and Brian began operating as Libby Brothers Custom Homes, which they ran together until 2022. In those years, the “Libby Boys” built homes for hundreds of families, many who became close friends.
At home, Steve was master chef and head gardener and was in his element preparing elaborate meals for loved ones. He enjoyed foraging for mushrooms and picking wild berries for preserves. He was a frequent patron to the area’s local farmers’ markets, occasionally even lending a hand to a vendor in exchange for a steak or two. Steve was especially close with “Farmer Bob,” a vendor who became a dear friend.
Steve was predeceased by his wife, Rhonda (Higgins) Libby, his parents, Sherrill and Vernon Libby, and his daughter, Amanda Dandro. He is survived by his son, Justin Libby and his husband Max Ward; daughter, Ashlee Lynch and her husband Ryan; son-in-law, Travis Dandro; grandchildren, Isaac, Wyeth, Feleke, Isa, Miles, Reuben, and Thea; brother, Brian Libby and his wife Gayle; sister, Kimberly Dunton; brother-in-law, Dennis Higgins and his wife Karen; and nieces and nephews, Bryan, Denys, Rachel, Angie, and Bradley.
No memorial service is immediately planned. A burial service will be scheduled later this spring. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bangor.
