DEDHAM - Susan Daigle died peacefully on May 14, 2014, surrounded by her family.
Susan was an amazing person. She was strong, spirited, spiritual, and had an infectious laugh. She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a year ago. The way she handled her illness and surgery, her diagnosis and all that happened to her was an inspiration - to her family, to her friends and even to the caregivers who met Susan. She showed undaunted courage, good humor, and grace under the most terrible pressure imaginable. She was the greatest!
Susan was born on May 29, 1946, and grew up and attended schools in Lynnfield, Massachusetts.
Susan was a "Renaissance Woman" who had assorted careers during her lifetime. She owned several businesses including a retail store called the Snow Goose in Marblehead, MA; she worked for Creative Consultants when she first moved to Bangor; she raked blueberries; was a flight attendant at Eastern Express where she met her husband, Peter; worked as human resource trainer at the Erin Company; owned Silver Moon Enterprises, a mail-order business selling Minnetonka Moccasins. She managed Gold's Gym in Bangor for five years; sold Mary Kay and Avon Cosmetics; and during the last few years, had an interior design business called Internal Affairs.
Susan loved good food, a crisp Pinot Grigio, an occasional Bloody Mary and maybe even a shot of tequila from time to time. She loved to cook for her family and friends at holidays and family get-togethers. She was famous for her seafood stew at her annual Christmas Eve open house.
She loved her "puppies," Vinnie and Frankie.
She had impeccable taste and an amazing eye for color, for jewelry, and for clothing. Now that she is there, we can be sure that heaven will be very tastefully decorated and that everything will match.
She loved to travel and especially loved Hawaii. She was able to vacation there many times. She went to Europe on several occasions, including a trip to Paris where she had lunch at the top of the Eiffel Tower on her birthday. Susan was fond of Las Vegas. After her surgery in August of last year, her goal was to go to the Holiday Inn Conference in Las Vegas in October. She was able to make that trip accompanied by her husband and her daughter, Lisa.
Susan always had a "bucket list" and was able to check many of the items off that list. Recently, she realized her dream of many years - to own a condo in Florida. This winter, she and her puppies were able to spend six weeks there with her family and friends who went down to visit.
Susan is survived by her husband, Peter; one daughter, Lisa Cary; a son, David Lazzaro; one sister, Betsy Hornyak and Betsy's husband, Joe; three "bonus" daughters, Jennifer, Jessica and Casey Daigle; three grandchildren, Brent, Allison, and Nicole Cary; a niece, Tara Largay; one nephew, Brad Chesley; mother-in-law, Annette Daigle; and sisters-in-law, Anne Bushey and Claire Daigle. Susan was predeceased by her parents, Janice and Russell Bowman; her favorite aunt, Natalie Pitman and by her dear friend, Jeanne Dunphy. Susan had so many close friends: Janet Bosworth, Joan Osler, Sande Curtis, Karen Dipietro, Barbara Marsh, Bindy Palmer, Tonya Andersen, Brenda St. Amand and many others who shared Susan's love and friendship, and were so loving, helpful and supportive during her illness.
The family wishes to thank the caring staff at Maine Medical Center and especially Dr. Lisa Rutstein, Donna Gordon and their team for the outstanding care and love they showed Susan during her illness. We thank Dr. Thomas Openshaw and the dedicated staff at the Lafayette Family Cancer Center for the excellent care given Susan while she was receiving chemotherapy treatments. And finally, thank you to the angels who took care of Susan while she was at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. You helped her find peace.
A memorial service for Susan will be held 10am Monday May 19, 2014 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor, followed by a short ceremony at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor. After the service, friends are invited to a reception at the Lucerne Inn in Dedham for a glass of Pinot Grigio and Fairy Tea.
