Susanne Reid

September 14, 1922 — March 11, 2022

Susanne E. Reid, 99, died peacefully March 11, 2022, while residing at Woodlands Memory Care in Brewer. She was born September 14, 1922, in Gera, Germany, the daughter of Fritz and Leopoldine (Dressler) Meyerweissflog.
Sue lived the early part of her life in Germany and Austria. In 1957 she came to the United States to be with her husband, Edward, whom she met while she was working at the Goethe Institute in Munich. After a couple of years of Ed’s teaching German outside of Maine, they moved to Orono in 1959 when he took a position at the University of Maine. Sue then spent many years as a homemaker while their two sons, Thomas and Peter, were young, and masterfully cooked for her family and their friends. Several summers were fondly spent at Hancock Pond relaxing, swimming, and entertaining guests. After becoming widowed in 1976, Sue went to work at UMaine for the College of Arts and Sciences, the same college where Ed had worked. She worked at UMaine until she retired in 1993.
In retirement Sue stayed connected with the University community and enjoyed over 25 years singing with the Oratorio Society. She was also known as a lover of all God’s creatures. When a bumble bee found its way onto her screened porch, she would gently gather it up in a tissue and put it back outside. Sue was especially fond of cats and dogs and was always excited for any opportunity to connect with them. Sue also enjoyed going out to eat and taking trips to the coast of Maine.
In addition to her husband, she was many years ago predeceased by a sister, Heidi. Surviving are her son Thomas and his wife Sue, of Newburgh, and Sue’s children Caitlin and Colin, son Peter and his wife Linda, of Orono, and children Nate and Ryan. She is also survived by two sisters, Ursula and Henriette, and nephews Alexander, Christian, and Mihai, and niece Melanie, all in Europe.
A private family service will be held later in the spring at Riverside Cemetery, Orono. Those who wish to remember Sue in a special way may make a gift in her memory to the Bangor Humane Society, 693 Mt. Hope Avenue, Bangor, or the Edward R. Reid Scholarship Fund, University of Maine Foundation, Two Alumni Place, Orono, Maine. Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com.
