Sylvia Jean (Lewis) McCarthy Pomroy, 86, passed away peacefully, at home, January 6th, 2019.
She was born in Brewer in 1932, the daughter of William J. and Rose Esther (DesJardins) Lewis.
Sylvia attended Bangor area schools leaving Bangor High in 1950. In 1966 she obtained her GED of which she was very proud. High School is where she developed her love of music and singing. She sang professionally during the 60’s and 70's with many local bands and musicians, performing at Miller's Restaurant, the NCO and Officers clubs at Dow AFB and numerous other venues and events. In later years, she enjoyed singing baritone with The River City Harmonizers and continued until her passing. In September of 1950 she married Robert J. McCarthy, with whom she had her four children.
She lived all but 11 years of her life in the family home in Bangor, where she raised her children as a single parent.
In 1961 she became owner of “The Pub” in downtown Bangor where you could get a .25 cent draft, a “Pubbie” sandwich, her famous homemade chili and pickled eggs! The Pub was a place where people came for some company and left feeling like family. Many of these people became lifelong friends of Sylvia's. In June of 1968 she married her second husband, Roger S. Pomroy of Brewer, and they continued operating The Pub together until 1971. In 1972 she opened Sylvia's Resale Shop in Brewer, one of the first of it's kind in the area. She operated a unique and successful business for over 35 years. Sylvia's provided generations of families with one of a kind clothing and accessories. The Vintage and Halloween departments were especially popular with all ages. To this day, Sylvia and her shop are fondly remembered by many. Sylvia was a longtime member of Zonta International, a professional woman’s organization and was the oldest member of the Bangor chapter. She was proud of her international travels with Zonta , especially her trip to Paris and also looked forward each fall to participating in the Zonta Marketplace. Sylvia was a woman ahead of her time. Being a single mother raising four children, gave her a sense of independence, pride and accomplishment. She practiced transcendental meditation and metaphysics throughout her life.
Surviving are a brother, Bernard Lewis of Virginia; daughters, Sue Thompson with her children, Laurie Williams and Jimmy Michaud; Jacqueline Haney and husband Michael and their children, Sabrina Ullmann and husband Cliff, Hannah Watkins and husband Jack, Brandon Haney and wife Hilary and Emily Zelinski and husband Jason; sons, Thomas McCarthy and wife Michelle, and their daughter Madison; Patrick McCarthy and companion Delia Hammond; great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Tyler, Dakota, Isaac, Elliot, Sammy, Sylvia, Nate, Mary, Iris, Jake and Ellie. All of whom she was so very proud. Throughout her life she enjoyed her trips to the coast with friends, her visits with family in Florida, the occasional round of golf, bowling on several local leagues, listening to her favorite tunes and belting them out at the top of her lungs, working in her garden, but most of all her time spent with family at “High Point”, on Springy Pond, built by her Dad, Bill in 1947.
