BREWER – T. Delia “Dee” (Gravelin) McLucas Cote Burpee, 84, died April 19, 2015 at her home in Brewer. She was born July 9, 1930 in Middleboro, MA, daughter of Peter D. and Thelma (Ray) Gravelin.
Dee attended schools in Middleboro and Boston, MA. She was employed in local shoe shops as a hand stitcher. Dee had a great love for the outdoor life. She loved to fish, hunt and enjoyed camping trips that often turned into great adventures. She also enjoyed painting. In her 50s she did white water rafting, in her 60s, she canoed the Allagash River. In 1968 Dee had the honor to be the first woman in the State of Maine to compete on a regular basis with men in stock car racing at Speedway 95. She was 2nd high point driver for that year and won the best sportsmanship award. Dee was proud of her achievement.
Dee is survived by a son, Larry McLucas of Thompsonville, IL; three daughters, June Hall and her husband, Hubert of Newport, Barbara Gould and her husband, Donald of Exeter and Carolyn Fish and her husband, Tim Reid of Bangor; 10 wonderful grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Peter Gravelin of MA; 2 sisters, Mary Pittsley and Carolyn Gravelin, both of Massachusetts; 4 stepchildren, Ron Cote, Marshall Ordway, Boyd Burpee and Denise Johnson. In addition to her son Mitchell Cote she was predeceased by her husband, Wildred B. Burpee Sr., and her brothers, Emerson Gravelin, and James Gravelin.
A funeral service will be held 12 noon Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main Street, Brewer with the Rev. Peter Remick officiating. Relatives and friends are welcome to call from 11am until time of service Tuesday. Interment will be in the Clark’s Hill Cemetery, Stetson.
