BANGOR-Theodora (Wright) Weston, 99, passed away August 9, 2020. Teddy was born February 17, 1921 in Springfield, VT, to David and Alice (Kingsbury) Wright, the youngest of 4 children.
The family lived in Springfield during the school year and moved to Westminster, VT in the summer where their father raised onions. She attended Colby College and met her future husband while visiting her roommate’s family over Thanksgiving. On January 12, 1942, she married Donald Weston of Madison, ME. Two days later Don shipped out, spending 46 months in the South Pacific during WWII. Teddy graduated in 1942 from Colby College with a degree in Mathematics and worked as a calculator for General Electric at the Jet Propulsion Lab in Schenectady, NY.
In 1946, Don and Teddy moved to Caribou, ME where he worked for Birdseye Pea and later Loring Air Force Base. Their 4 children were born in Caribou. In 1957 they left the house they built, and moved to Winterport, ME when Don accepted a position at Dow Air Force Base in Bangor.
Teddy substitute taught in the local schools for many years. She even taught in Prospect’s school with 8 grades in one room for an extended time. In 1970 she started teaching full time at Hampden Academy, in the mathematics department. She specialized in teaching students who struggled with math. Teddy cared deeply for her students and many have told the family what a positive impact she had on their lives.
Don and Teddy were active in the community where they lived. Teddy was involved with PTA, Women’s Club, and Scouting. For years she was the historian and archivist for the Winterport Historical Society. While in her 90s she led annual walking tours of the town. She wrote two books; Send Me, the biography of her Aunt Hattie who was a missionary and doctor in India, and More River Town History, a collection of historical articles about Winterport.
Teddy was an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Bangor.
After retiring in 1979, Don and Teddy traveled extensively in their RV, making many trips all over the country and to Alaska. They also toured in Europe, Canada, Brazil and Australia.
Teddy enjoyed many hobbies and activities including gardening, reading, rocks and minerals, sewing, quilting, bird watching, following the Patriots and the Red Sox, spending time at their camp in Ellsworth, cooking, and playing the piano. Any time the town of Winterport needed someone to play the piano, they called on Teddy. As arthritis crippled Teddy’s hands, she had to give up many of her hobbies, but she never complained, just went on to other activities. Even while almost blind, the week before she died Teddy re-read one of her favorites, the 800-page book Come Spring by Ben Ames Williams.
Teddy was loved by everyone in the Christian Hill neighborhood of Winterport where she lived for almost 60 years. She was like a grandmother to the children and a special friend to the adults. Thanks to the neighbors watching out for her, Teddy was able to continue living in her home after Don died, until 2016 when she moved to the Sylvia Ross Home in Bangor. After she moved the neighbors continued to visit and support her.
In addition to her parents, Teddy was predeceased by her husband, Don; brothers Walt, Alfred and Justin; nephews, Doug and David Wright, Bruce and George Weston.
She is survived by her son, John and his wife, Teri, of Malone, NY; daughter, Anne and husband, Clint Worthley, of Hampden; son, Stephen and his companion, Terrilyn Simpson, of Winthrop; son, Peter and his wife, Judy, of Scarborough; and several nieces, and nephews. Her grandson Joel Weston of Seattle will miss his grandmother very much.
The family wishes to thank the staff and other residents at the Sylvia Ross Home, and Hospice for the excellent care and friendship they provided Teddy.
A graveside service will be held 10:00 AM Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at Oak Hill Cemetery, Lebanon Road, Winterport. Teddy suggested contributions be made in her memory to the Winterport Historical Society, P.O. Box 342, Winterport, ME 04496 or the Unitarian Universalist Society of Bangor, 120 Park Street, Bangor, ME 04401.
