Vaughn Smith

February 8, 1936 — September 30, 2024

BANGOR - Vaughn E. Smith, 88, died peacefully on September 30, 2024, at his home with his devoted family at his side, following a decline in his health. He was born February 8, 1936, in Bangor, the son of Harold D. and Marion (Leathers) Smith.

A graduate of Bangor High School, Class of 1954, he began his career in the family business, eventually becoming one of the owners of Harold D. Smith & Sons.

He married the love of his life, Judith L. Pearson, 63 years ago. She predeceased him in January of this year.
Vaughn had numerous hobbies such as flying lessons, financial/investment clubs, gardening, photography, stain glass, camping, bowling, golfing, snowmobiling, riding his motorcycle, and preparing his firewood for the winter.
Vaughn served in the Maine Air National Guard 132nd Ftr Intcp Sqdn at Dow Air Force Base. He was the clerk of works for the Good Samaritan Agency, which dedicated the building in his honor on September 2, 1999. He worked for St. Joseph Hospital as the owners’ rep on numerous hospital expansions. He did some contract work for the Sunbury group.

Vaughn belonged to the City Club and Rotary Club. His contributions to his community were numerous and included Member, Jaycees, Bangor’s Committee of 50, Bangor's citizen's advisory committee, BanAir Corp, Mason’s, and Anah Shriner’s. Director, United Cerebral Palsy of Northeast Maine; Director, United Bank. Trustee, Bangor Water District; and Trustee, St. Joseph’s Hospital for 25 years serving.

In addition to his parents and wife, Vaughn was predeceased by his siblings, Eleanor Farrington, Richard Smith and Sheldon Smith. He is survived by his daughter, Sharon Miller and her husband, David, of Newcastle; his son, Paul Smith, of Bangor; three grandchildren, Patrick, Jacob, and Mya; three sisters, Roberta Scott, of Sullivan, Barbara Haskell, of Orrington, and Gloria Falkner, of Eddington and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank his caring neighbors, devoted caregivers, or “Dads Team” especially Karin Lee and Gentiva hospice, and especially Wendy Worcester C.N.A. extraordinaire.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call from 4-6 p.m., Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor where a funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 9 with Chaplain Eric Larsen officiating.
