Velva Constantine

October 20, 1923 — September 13, 2015

BANGOR - Velva D. (Richards) Constantine, loving wife of Walter Constantine, died peacefully on September 13, 2015. She was born October 20, 1923 in Caribou, the daughter of Oscar Ray and Mattie (Davenport) Richards.

After Val graduated from Caribou High School she moved to Bangor with her 16 year old sister “Babe” in 1941, eventually spending 20 years working for the Bangor and Aroostook railroad as the first (and last) hostess. Val married Walter Constantine on July 12, 1945. Through hard work and determination they built a home together in Bangor where they raised their son. In 1955, Walter “Bud”, Val and Joe moved to the family farm, built in 1853 in Bangor. Fogg Farm became their home for the next 60 years. During this time Val was a teacher at 14th street school. In the summer Fogg Farm was also home to Camp Brookside, where the students she taught during the school year could continue their education during the summer months, as only Val and a wonderful group of teachers/camp counselors could teach it. There was never a child that crossed Val’s path who did not receive a lesson, a hug and certainly a smile. Val’s favorite place up until the very end was looking from the porch over the beautiful farm she and “Bud” loved so much.

Surviving in addition to her husband Walter, is her son, Joseph Constantine and his wife Kathleen, of Bangor; granddaughter, Meghan Fellis and her husband Craig and their children of Mariaville; and a great granddaughter, Kaya Constantine Bowler. She is also survived by two brothers, Ray Richards Jr. and his wife Marjorie of Delaware, Gary Richards and his wife Mary Etta, of Presque Isle and sisters in law Delores Richards and Georgine Richards and by many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents Val was predeceased by her grandson, Joshua Richards Constantine, sisters Roberta Shaw, Beverly Statler and brothers Sterling, Hubert and Curtis Richards and sister in law Genevieve Small.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call 4-6pm Friday, September 18, 2015 at Brookings Smith 133 Center Street, Bangor, Maine.

Private interment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery, Bangor on Saturday September 19, 2015.
