Veazie and Glenburn – Verne Sherwood Flood, 81, died May 18, 2022 at home with family by
his side. Verne was born on September 25, 1940, the son of Verne Flood and Myrtle (Brackley)
Flood of Strong.
Growing up Verne (known back then as Sherry) worked on the family farm and for Strong Wood
Turning Co., owned by treasured maternal grandfather C.H. Brackley. After obtaining a degree
from Husson College Verne went on to a successful business career in the Bangor area.
He worked for many years leasing and selling trucks at Motor Truck & Trailer, Bean & Conquest,
and Varney GMC. He also owned and operated Flood GMC-Scania. Settling in Veazie, Verne
and his wife Jacqi raised the two daughters he was so very proud of. Summers were spent on
Beech Hill Pond and yearly family reunions in the Rangeley Lake region were cherished
occasions. After retirement Verne and Jacqi lived for part of the year in Punta Gorda.
An excellent athlete, Verne played basketball and baseball through high school, coached by his
beloved father. He bowled in a Bangor league for years, and he was an avid golfer, often seen on
the Bangor Municipal Golf Course. Verne had both a tender heart and a shrewd mind for
business, and with his remarkable warmth and humor he couldn’t help but make friends
wherever he went.
Dick Wheeler and Verne roomed together in college and became lifelong
friends and brothers. Verne and Jacqi enjoyed enduring friendships with Bob and Nancy
Whitney and Roger and Betty Gagnon. After Jacqi passed in 2017 Verne reconnected with dear
friend Nancy Raymond. He enjoyed life with Nancy and her extended family, especially
Nancy’s nephew Harrison Pomeroy, III. Perhaps most of all he enjoyed the haying season at
Pomeroy Family Farm, where he earned the title of Bale Counter and Water Boy. The Pomeroys
welcomed him in and made him feel like he’d come home.
Verne is survived by his daughters, Shannon (Rick Doyle) and Suzanne and grandsons, Robinson Doyle and Robert Augustine. He is also survived by his sister, Janice (Skip) Pike, nephew, nieces, cousins, and many other friends and relatives. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts, by cousins, Carolyn Gage and Brud Mitchell, and by special in-laws, Fred Gage, Bob Pike and Tim Cote. The family is grateful for the care provided by Joe Harkins, Shanora Goler and Kindred Hospice.
