Joseph Hermond Vernon Marchel Dixon

June 24, 1938 — October 6, 2023

Vernon Dixon, of Lincoln, Maine passed away peacefully following a period of declining health in hospice care in Lee, Maine. He was born June 24, 1938 in Limestone Siding, New Brunswick, Canada—the oldest of 5 children born to Harmon and Mary Rose (LaForest) Dixon.

He graduated from John Caldwell School, Grandfalls, New Brunswick, Canada and relocated with his family to Limestone, Maine. Shortly thereafter, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. In 1961 during the Cuban Missile Crisis, his Battalion “Old Ironsides” was placed on high alert and sent to Fort Stewart, Georgia. While stationed here, President John F. Kennedy arrived to personally address the troops.

The values he acquired during his military service contributed to his achievements in civilian life. Upon returning home from the Army, he became a Certified Volkswagen mechanic working for years at Volkswagen of Presque Isle. He later owned and operated an auto-mechanic business for over 20-years in Caribou (West Gate Amoco) and Presque Isle (Gulf). Vern entered the vocational educational sector as an Auto Instructor for Region 3 in Lincoln, Maine for another 20-years. He enjoyed teaching and mentoring young students pursuing employment in the automotive sector. After retiring, he was employed as a Security Office by the Hollywood Casino Raceway in Bangor, Maine. Where he enjoyed working with the public, meeting the jockeys and their horses.
Vernon was a good soul—kind, mechanically talented and blessed with a good heart. Vernon always extended friendship to all he met. All who were fortunate enough to meet or know Vern will sadly miss him.

Much loved by his parents, siblings and friends, Vernon passed into the hands of his Heavenly Father on October 6, 2023 at the age of 85. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ruth of 43 years and sisters, Mary Theresa Wunderlich and Mary Elise Pickels. Vernon will be deeply missed by his youngest brother Alphonse Dixon and wife Kirsten of Groveland, Florida, and youngest sister, Beatrice (Dixon) Pirie of Bedford, New Hampshire; along with two brothers-in-law, Robert Wunderlich of Clermont, Florida and Gerald Pickels of Cabot, Arkansas; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Vern’s life will be held at the Caribou Veterans Cemetery in Caribou, Maine on November 6, 2023 at 1 pm.
