Kenduskeag - Vicki Jo Sodermark, died April 20, 2023, at a Bangor hospital after a sudden illness. She was born February 27, 1957 daughter of James and Virginia (Pullen) Sodermark.
Vicki grew up in Kenduskeag and graduated in 1976 from Central High School in Corinth. She graduated from the University of Southern Maine in 1980 with a bachelor's in Nursing. Vicki later pursued her Masters in Nursing and Nursing Education while living in Omaha, Nebraska, successfully graduating in 1995 with her two small children in tow. Vicki was devoted to her work and always seeking more knowledge. Vicki worked at many area healthcare facilities during her career while living in Maine from the MidCoast to Monson. She started at St. Joseph's in Bangor then to Mayo Regional before moving to Nebraska. While living in Nebraska she worked at area hospitals, the Nebraska Department of Health, and two colleges as a Nursing Instructor and the Director of the Nursing Program. Vicki had many accolades and achievements, but her most appreciated and unexpected was being the recipient of the “Teaching In Excellence" Award which is a national award for “extraordinary work demonstrating an outstanding commitment and contribution to her students and colleagues” on campus.
In Vicki’s quasi-retirement she returned to Maine to care for her elderly parents and write, review, and contribute to and for Elsevier Health nursing textbooks. After her parents' passing, she returned to nursing in elderly and long-term care, offering the kindness and magnanimous knowledge she had acquired throughout her career. She even worked while using a walker herself! She loved and lived for her patients and colleagues finding purpose in caring for others. In her off time, Vicki loved to knit and crochet, a talent she acquired from her grandmother Florence Sodermark. Vicki also had a beautiful voice and could play the flute and 12-string guitar.
Her life was filled with ways to entertain and care for people, especially her grandchildren. Vicki loved her grandchildren beyond belief and would knit and crochet items for them and call and sing to them on their birthdays. She will be remembered for all of these things but especially for her beaming warm smile, glittering blue eyes, and contagious laugh. Her time here was cut way too short but her memories will remain for lifetimes to come. In addition to her parents, Vicki was predeceased by her Uncle Linwood “Greg” Hildreth; brother-in-law Frank Knaut; and great-niece Rae.
She is survived by her daughters Miranda Haskin and husband Martin, and Melissa Moulton and partner Mark Rodriguez; her loving Aunt Pauline Sodermark and Aunt Clarissa "Clarie" McClure; grandchildren, James F. Sodermark, Brianna and Brooklyn Esten, Zoey Rodriguez, and Krisstiann Haskin; great-grandchild Osiris Sodermark; her three sisters Valerie Knaut, Sherry Swan and husband Marc, and Sandy Keith and husband John; nieces and nephews Jennifer and husband Scott Hoenig; Jason and wife Heather Knaut; Jesse and wife Allison Keith; and Meagan and husband Chris Hashey; and many great nieces and nephews; a special friend Robert. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Tonya, Patrick, and Robert.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 4, 2023 at the Corinthian Cemetery, 20 Notch Rd, Corinth, Maine.
