Walter “Bud” J. Constantine

September 28, 1922 — March 8, 2021

BANGOR – Walter “Bud” J. Constantine, 98, passed away Monday, March 8, 2021, at a Bangor healthcare facility. He was born September 28, 1922, in Bangor, to Joseph and Manola (Fogg) Constantine.
Walter attended Bangor schools and, upon graduating from Bangor High School, began employment at Penobscot Paint on Exchange Street. At the age of 30, Walter was hired by Charles O'Leary, who owned The O'Leary Insurance Adjusting Agency. After training, Walter formed his own independent agency, which he ran successfully until the age of 70. On July 12, 1945, Walter married Velva “Val” Richards, the first and last hostess on the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad. Together, the couple built a home on Norway Road in Bangor where they raised their only child, a son who, with his wife, continue to reside. In 1961, after completing renovations (mostly done on their own) the family moved to Walter's ancestral home on Ohio Street. Built in 1853, he was the 4th generation to occupy Fogg Farm. Walter and Val enjoyed their lives in the country together for nearly 60 years.
Over the years, "The Farm" was a wonderful, adventuresome place for young and old: Cookouts, whiffle ball games and exploring the 40 acres to name just a few. All were welcomed with open arms. A man with a keen eye for quality, Walter was great collector of antiques, art and good books.
Walter was predeceased by his loving wife of 70 years; his grandchildren, Joshua Richards Constantine and Meghan Constantine Fellis; sister, Genevieve Small; and several in-laws. Survivors include his son, Dr. Joseph Constantine and his wife, Kathleen (Atwood); great-granddaughter, Kaya Constantine Bowler; nephews, Timothy Small and his wife, Carol, Thomas Small and his wife, Nancy; niece, Diane Small D'Amico; and brother-in-law, Gary Richards and his wife, Mary Etta.
A private graveside service for the family will be held later in the spring at Oak Grove Cemetery, Bangor. Those wishing to remember Walter in a special way may make donations to the Bangor Public Library, 145 Harlow St., Bangor, ME 04401, or the Bangor YMCA, 17 Second St., Bangor, ME 04401.
