Wayne Spofford

April 2, 1933 — April 11, 2020

Brewer - Wayne Alvra Spofford, 87, died April 11, 2020 at a Bangor Hospital. He was born April 2, 1933, in Rockland, the son of Arthur and Sara (Crockett) Spofford.

Wayne was raised in Stonington. His mother raised him and his sister after his father died when he was a teenager. He has always had a special love for Stonington and any chance he got, Wayne would travel there to see family and friends and smell the ocean air.

He graduated from Stonington High School, Class of 1951 and went to a trades school in Augusta before he was married. Wayne served in the United States Army during the Korean War, as a ham radio operator.

He was married to his loving wife, Letha, on November 8, 1952.

Wayne was employed at Footman’s Dairy as a milkman for 30 years. Following his retirement, he continued to work for Modern Pest Control and Darlings Ford as the Parts Dept delivery driver for many years. Wayne made many friends and acquaintances during his employments. He was a kind, compassionate caring man. Wayne had many a story to tell and he touched the lives of everyone he met no matter where he was. He was without a doubt a gentleman of all gentlemen.

He was a member of the Ralph J. Pollard Lodge #217, AF & AM of Orrington, and a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary District INR Flotilla 12, Bangor. Maine

Positions he held while being a member of the Flotilla 12, were Commander, Vice Commander, Coxswain, Vessel Safety Inspector and Qualified Examiner. Wayne retired after 30 years with the Flotilla. Boating and sailing were such great passions of his even though he didn’t own a boat. When asked to go out on patrol or even just for a ride, he was ready, willing and eager to go. Wayne was so happy on the water.

Our Dad was a role model for all other Dads. He enjoyed going camping to Bar Harbor Campground and others with family and friends. His family was his life. Wayne also enjoyed playing dartball at Second Congregational Church and the East Orrington Congregational Church while he was able to.

In addition to his parents, Wayne was predeceased by his wife, Letha in 2016, and two daughters, Sally and Sherri.

He is survived by his daughter, Tamra Jamieson and husband, Jerry, of Dedham; three sons, Kerry Spofford and wife, Pamela, of Holden, Barry Spofford and wife, Cathi, of Monroe, and Donald Spofford and wife, Faye, of Brewer; sister, Glenna Aldrich; grandchildren, Elissa McCall, Kimberly Lorenz, Renee Giguere, Julie Pace, Courtney Carter, Joshua Torrey, Matthew Spofford and Meghan Spofford; great grandchildren, William, Molly, Kelsey, Caden, Waylon, Danielle, Clara, Kaylob, Prestyn, and Matty; several nieces and nephews; former son-in-law, Allen Doll.

While residing at the Leach Home, he had a metal sign in the shape of an old milk truck attached to the front of his walker. He would proudly walk around the facility with his walker. Even then, he was still “the milkman”. He was always teasing someone there - each time with a twinkle in his eyes.

The family would like to give special thanks to the staffs at the Ellen M. Leach Memorial Home and Northern Light Health EMMC staff and Northern Light Home Care & Hospice for their exceptional care of our Dad.

Kerry, Barry and Don would like to especially thank our dear sister, Tammy, for taking such wonderful care of our Dad and our Mom’s wants and needs for so many years. Dad and Tammy had a one in a million loving father/daughter relationship.

A memorial service will be held at the East Orrington Congregational Church at a date and time to announced.

If anyone wishes to make a donation in his memory, it can be made payable to the Friends of Ellen M. Leach Memorial Home, 58 Colonial Circle, Brewer, Maine 04412, to be put towards the activities for the residents.
