Orono – Wesley Francis Gray passed away peacefully at the Maine Veterans' Home on 24 December 2015. He was born on April 13, 1921 in Bangor, the son of Leland and Maude (Martin) Gray.
Wes graduated from Old Town High School, class of 1938, then worked with the Civilian Conservation Corp in 1939-40. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy in 1942. Wes served aboard the USS Arcturus attaining the rank of First Class Radarman. His ship saw action in seven amphibious operations including the invasions of North Africa, Sicily, Salerno, Southern France and first landing of occupational troops at Jinsen, Korea and on the coast of China at Tientsin by the U.S. Marines. His ship, an attack cargo vessel, went in with the initial assault forces in the Okinawa operation. Upon his discharge from the Navy, Wes returned home and married Gloria Lounsbury of Orono. He worked at Hincks Oil Co. in Bangor for a number of years and the University of Maine, where he retired after 20 years of service as an accountant. Wes enjoyed working as a certified track and field official at college and high school events. He was a member of the University of Maine M Club and worked at the scorer's table at Maine basketball and hockey for many years. He was an avid Chicago Cubs baseball fan. Upon retirement he travelled with his wife throughout the east coast and Canada, spending many winters in Myrtle Beach, SC. Wes shared 68 years of marriage with his wife Gloria.
He was predeceased by his parents, stepmother Agnes Gray, and his wife Gloria. Wes is survived by four sons, Alan of Old Town, Martin and wife Susanne of Corinth, Michael and wife Joanne of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada and Christopher of Seabrook, NH; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of the Maine Veterans' Home for their compassion and care; and to son Alan for the considerate and unwavering care and company he gave to his father for the five years Wesley was at the Maine Veterans’ Home.
