William Ayer

July 12, 1950 — November 5, 2021

William “Billy” Charles Ayer, 71, died peacefully with courage and dignity at his home on November 5, 2021. He was surrounded by his loving wife Dawn, sons Corey and Matthew, and friend Dave. He was born on July 12, 1950, the son of Donald W. and Bernice P. Ayer.

His earliest days were filled with explorations and adventures in the fields and woods behind the family home on Silver Road. His youth was spent hunting and fishing with his dad and brothers. These activities would become lifelong passions which he passed along to his sons. He especially enjoyed the wilderness of the Matagamon Lake region, the family camp on Schoodic Lake, and traveling the Stud Mill Road.

Billy pursued a career in construction, mostly with Robert Wardwell Construction and Lane Construction. He took great pride in building roads and bridges throughout this region of Maine.

He is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Dawn, his sons Corey Ayer (and Tambra), Matthew Ayer, Joseph (and Lillian) Tuck, and grandbabies Joseph II, Weston, and Colsen. He loved being a Papa! He also leaves behind his sisters Donna Lee Ayer, Carolyn Ayer and Mike Foster, Belinda Sullivan and husband Dana; brother Skip Ayer and wife Barbie; sisters-in-law Candy Ayer, Deborah Placek and husband Richard, M.D., Deanna Packer and husband Harry; brother-in-law James Provost and wife Rose; nieces, nephews, and many great-nieces and great-nephews, and cousins. Billy is lovingly remembered by friends David O’Clair (blood brother), Richie O’Clair, Stanley and Sherry Hanscom, Joe, Sue, Don, and Diane of Matagamon Wilderness Campground, and special neighbors Bob and Sue. Last, but not least, he will be missed by beloved guard dog, Zoey. Billy was predeceased by his parents and his brother Tommy Ayer.

The eagle was a symbol of all that Billy loved and one appeared right on time to carry his spirit home. His family and friends will gather to celebrate his life this summer on the shores of Matagamon Lake. Donations may be made in his memory to Matagamon Lake Association, Inc. P.O. Box 676, Patten, ME 04765. Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com
