William Charpentier

June 2, 1938 — January 1, 2022

BANGOR – William A. Charpentier Sr., 83, passed away peacefully, January 1, 2022, at a local hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 2, 1938, in Whitehall, New York, the son of Adelard and Mary (Brewer) Charpentier.

William grew up in Watervliet, where he attended Catholic High School, and sang in many choirs. After high school, he enlisted in the Navy and was a shipmate on the world’s first guided missile cruiser, USS Boston CAG-1. He toured the world and had many wonderful experiences and memories. Upon finishing his two years in the Navy, he settled back in the upstate New York area, got a job with Western Union, and met his wife, Judy. They raised four beautiful children. A job opportunity brought the family to Maine in the mid-seventies. Bill became a head custodian for St Theresa’s Catholic Church and later for the Bangor school system. Bill was an active member in the community donating his time and energy to political campaigns, representing the education support staff with the school union, and coaching little league baseball. He was especially proud or the garden he designed and planted with the children of 14th St School in Bangor. His passion for gardening and singing in church choirs continued though his life.

After 34 years of marriage, Bill lost his wife, Judy, to cancer.

In 2004, he met Nancy Hallett Barrett, from the Finger Lakes area in upstate New York, in Bangor. They met through their love of gardening and singing in choirs. They settled in the Bangor Gardens and transformed property into beautiful gardens, with rose, perennials, and arbors. Feeding the birds was also a passion for Bill. He always had cardinals among an array of birds throughout the year.

Bill was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and faithful friend. He passed his work ethics on to his children, who all went on to succeed in their professions.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, Nancy Charpentier, are his loving children, William Charpentier Jr. and his wife, Helen, John Charpentier and his partner, Susan Cynewski, Jim Charpentier and his wife, Karen, Nikki Ireland and her husband, David; grandchildren, Matthew, Jordan and his wife, Veronica, Ashley and her partner, Cody, Tricia, and Nicole; he is also survived by an extended family; the Bugbee family, from Blue Hill, who loved him dearly; as well as grandchildren from Watertown, New York, and Oregon. He will be missed by all.
