William C. Hughes, also known as “Billy”, passed away peacefully January 1, 2022 at his home with his loving family and beloved wife, Constance by his side. He was born in Bangor on June 9, 1931 the son of Edward J. Hughes Sr. and Arlene Kane Hughes.

He attended John Bapst High School but never finished as he left to help his father in the family business. William was later called to the Air Force in 1950 and served until 1952. Once he returned home, William and Constance C. Pooler married on July 19th, 1952.

William is survived by his five children, Kevin Hughes of Brewer, ME, Peter Hughes and his wife Janet of Hampden, ME, Michael Hughes and his wife Faye of Debary, FL, Mary Jane Hughes of Rolling Hills, CA, and Holly Hughes Manzo of Windham, NH.

William and Constance raised their family in their home on No. Main St. in Brewer and spent their summers at their camp on Lucerne Lake. William was the grandfather of nine, Sheena Scales, Amber Spiess, William Hughes, Ashley and Meghan Manzo, Sophia and Michael Murillo, and step-grandchildren Larry Langille and Jenna Packard. He was a great grandfather to seven.

William was a well-respected and honored man in the greater Bangor area, where he was involved in civic and community affairs for years. Beyond his activeness in the community, he was a humble and generous man who cared deeply for friends and family, especially his mother in-law “Bauba”, who lived in his home for over 22 years. Anyone who came to know William was influenced by his hard work, dedication, and ambition.

William was a Korean War veteran, Honorary Discharge and also earned Fourth-Degree with the Knights of Columbus. He was awarded “Outstanding Achievement and Exceptional Accomplishment” by the State of Maine for a heroic and daring rescue during the Bangor Flood in 1975.

William served as past President of Hughes Brothers Construction Co., Bangor Jaycees, Yankee Fisheries, Inc., and Hill Drilling and Blasting Co. He served as past Vice-President of GNH Inc. and H&N local real estate developers. He was an exceptionally established business man who began his journey with his father’s business, Hughes Brothers Construction Company which he took over as third-generation. Once he became owner, he spent his life dedicated to expanding the company and maintaining the Hughes name. William was also past co-owner of Stable Inn Motels located in both Brewer and Calais. He was a self-made businessman who believed in hard work and dedication. William’s note to the young is “you will not succeed without ambition as it is the key to success.”

Other notable civic and community affairs he was involved in included being a past member of the Board of Trustees of the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, ME, Bangor Lions Club, Bangor Lodge of Elks, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Brewer Zoning Board of Appeals, YMCA of Bangor, Penobscot Valley Country Club, and the Board of Trustees of the Brewer Savings Bank.

Outside of his busy work life, he included his family and friends in his favorite hobbies which included flying his Cessna airplane and captaining his boats in Florida and Maine. He especially loved his boat called the “Red E Mix” which he Captained up the East coast from Florida to Bangor with his son Kevin. William cherished his time with his friends, frequenting the Sea Dog in Bangor as well as Shooter’s Waterfront in Ft. Lauderdale, FL where he spent the majority of his winters. Other places that were of importance to him included lake Sabeo where he hunted, fished, and played cards with many of his buddies. He enjoyed traveling extensively throughout his lifetime, to include a trip to Africa and cruises to Antarctica and the Panama Canal. William was also an active and devoted member of St. Mary’s Church in Bangor and St. Joseph’s Church in Brewer.

A mass of Christian burial will be held 11 am. Saturday January 8, 2022 at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Ohio St., Bangor. A private inurnment will follow at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery. A Celebration of William’s remarkable life will take place, following the mass, at the Brookings-Smith, Reception Rooms, 55 South Main St., Brewer , where friends and family are invited to gather to enjoy food, drinks, and to reminisce.
