William Ricker Houston Symonds
“Will”
Will lost his battle with heroin addiction on May 6, 2016. He was born on March 21, 1994, the son of Heather M. Houston and Jonathan I. Symonds. His birth was joyously celebrated.
Will graduated from Bangor High School in 2012. He was a good friend to many throughout his school years. Will was a distinguished member of the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corp, serving as battalion commander during his senior year. He loved playing soccer and was a member of the BHS soccer team for four years, as well as many local travel teams. Will was also on the BHS swim team for four years; according to Coach Phil Emery, “he had a little too much Symonds in him to be a star swimmer”. One of Will’s happiest memories was being a co-emcee of the annual BHS Talent Show his senior year. He loved to make people laugh.
After graduating, Will attended Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont – the oldest private military college in the country. After one year there, he enlisted in the Army Reserves and had plans to attend basic training the spring of 2014. After suffering a work injury while employed as a host at Governor’s Restaurant, he was discharged from the Reserves. Three surgeries on his wrist contributed to his struggle with addiction. Will was employed as an IT support specialist at EMHS at the time of his death, and had very recently returned from a rehab program in Texas. Will was a kind, gentle and loving soul; he gave the best hugs ever. His passing leaves a long shadow over the many who love him.
Will was predeceased by his namesake, his maternal grandfather, William M. Houston, Sr.; his paternal grandmother, Dorothea Symonds Tyler, and his uncle, David Symonds. He is survived by his mother, Heather, his father, Jon and his wife, Sally, and a very dear friend, Jeanne Paradis; his maternal grandmother, Ruth Houston England and her husband, Richard. Will leaves behind his beloved siblings: Trevor, Abigail, Madelyn and Erica, as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins, and his dear girlfriend, Makinzie. He loved his close friends, too numerous to name, but we hope you know who you are. Will’s sweet heart, his quirky humor, and his winning smile were his finest features.
Relatives and friends are invited to call 5-7 pm. Wednesday May 11, 2016 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St. Bangor. A service in celebration of his life will be held 1 pm. Thursday May 12, 2016 at Hammond St. Congregational Church, 28 High St, Bangor, with the Rev. Dr. Mark Allen Doty, pastor officiating.
