William J. “Bill” Sayers Jr. died Tuesday, December 12, 2023, in Bangor, Maine after a long illness. He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.
Bill was born February 11, 1943, in Monticello, NY, the son of William J. Sayers Sr. and Dorothy (Tutton) Sayers. He spent most of his life in Horseheads, NY and graduated from Horseheads High School in 1960. He served in the U.S. Army with the 82nd Airborne Division as a paratrooper until honorably discharged in 1964. Following the army, Bill worked as an Officer in the New York State Department of Corrections for 38 years, at Green Haven Prison and Elmira Correctional Facility. While in Green Haven, he met the love of his life, Linda Maloney, and they were married on September 21, 1968. They recently celebrated 55 years of marriage together.
Bill enjoyed spending time with his family and loved to have fun. He had a life-long love for riding his Harley Davidson motorcycles, especially in the NY Hudson Valley and Finger Lakes. He liked to canoe and kayak, hike, and relax with his favorite TV shows. He had a great sense of humor and especially enjoyed a little dark humor to get through life.
Bill is survived by his wife, Linda (Maloney) Sayers; daughters, Deborah Wilson and her husband, Jody, of Florida, Kathryn McCullouch and her husband, Michael, of Old Town ME; grandchildren, Joseph Sayers, Zachary Wilson, and Megan Wilson, all of Florida; one brother, Dr. James H. Sayers PhD and his partner, Kenneth Link of North Carolina; brothers-in-law, William and Richard Alexis of Stormville, NY, and James Maloney of NC; many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by his sisters, Marian King and Mable Newman.
