Obituary for John Henry Hart

Bangor – John "Jack" Hart, Jr., D.C., passed away unexpectedly Monday, December 19, 2016, in his home in Bangor. Although born in Cambridge, MA, he moved to Maine very early in his life, attending schools in Rumford and Dixfield, before matriculating to the University of Maine. He then attended National College in Lombard, IL, to become a chiropractor, returning to Maine to practice in the Bangor area. He had a remarkable success rate as a physician, earning the respect and gratitude of many.

He was a member of the Anah Shriners Clown unit, always stopping to entertain any children along the parade routes. He was a Paul Harris Fellow in Bangor Rotary, serving one term as President during the tumultuous time when women won the right to join. He loved growing tomatoes, carrots, and apple trees. He enjoyed comic books, old boys series books, hunting, fishing, and being Irish.

A lifelong, passionate University of Maine fan, he was very active for decades, serving on fund-raising and policy making boards and groups, especially Friends of Maine Hockey.

However, his love for all things UMaine was surpassed by his love for his three children: Michael, Eiranne, and Christopher. He passed on to each of them some of his finer qualities of fair play, kindness, loyalty, respect and caring for others. That is his legacy, of which he was most proud.

Services will be held in the spring, when his extended family can all come. Gifts in memory of John H. Hart, Jr., D.C. may be made to the Alfond Fund Athletic Scholarships, payable to the University of Maine Foundation, Two Alumni Place, Orono, ME 04469-5792 or online at umainefoundation.org/memorial.
