Obituary for Margaret McGinley (Higgins)

Margaret McGinley (Higgins)
Bangor - Margaret “Peg” McGinley, 89, died unexpectedly December 4, 2017. She was born August 9, 1928 in Bangor, the daughter of Andrew and Kathryn (Givren) Higgins.

Peg was a devoted lifelong member of St. John’s Church and attended both St. John’s and John Bapst high schools. Except for a brief move to Boston in her late teens, she was proud to be a lifetime resident of Bangor’s “east side”. She met her future husband, Philip, during one of her visits home from Boston and they were married 2 years later on May 8, 1948. They remained married for 61 years until Philip’s death in 2009. In 1945 she began working as a telephone operator for AT&T and continued until her first child was born. She was a devoted mother who constantly put her children’s needs and wants ahead of her own. Family meant everything to Peg from a very early age and she maintained close ties with her siblings and their families throughout her life.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Douglas. Surviving are her 4 children, Michael McGinley and his wife, Jean Wu, of Bellevue WA, Patrick McGinley and his wife, Lily Trevino, of Denton, TX, Diane McGinley of Veazie, and Ann McGinley and her husband, Marc Holland, of Granby CT; 7 grandchildren, Matthew McGinley, Jennifer Maskala, Jake McGinley, Stephanie McGinley, Michael Holland, Ryan Holland and Brian McGinley; 5 Great grandchildren, Daniel McGinley, Mason Frank, Daemon Maskala, Tilly McGinley, and Thomas McGinley; two sisters, Lois Spellman and her husband John, of Bangor and Judy Smith of Bangor; many loving nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friend are welcome to call 6-8 p.m. Monday, December 11, 2017 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. Funeral Mass will be held at 12:00 noon, Tuesday, December 12, at St. John’s Catholic Church, 207 York St., Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Boyd House, 21 Boyd Street Bangor ME, 04401 immediately after the mass. Burial will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery at a later date.
