As one of Rick’s colleagues in the psychology department at UMaine, I have known him since I joined the faculty there in 1979. As it happens, one of my first meetings with Rick was when he passed along to me the sad news of the death of Joe Saxl, Superintendent of the Bangor Mental Health Institute where I had worked previously. Rick had known that Joe and I had been close friends, and I was grateful for Rick’s sensitivity in taking me aside to let me know that news. And many years later he and I had a tearful conversation after the tragic accidental death of Michele Alexander, a new colleague in social psychology. Rick was of course a major figure in the department and in the much wider professional community here and abroad, with his research collaborations in Europe and his innovative research on personality and that branch of psychology known as social learning theory. I shared that interest, and Rick was kind enough to pass resources along to me, from his own work and that of others, and I remember with appreciation the discussions he and I had about that topic. Among the highlights about Rick that made an impression on me were his love for his family; his dedication to his profession; and his generosity, for example in establishing scholarships for psychology students partly funded by the royalties from his books. Part of Rick’s legacy will live on in his students, in his books and research articles, and also in his colleagues and friends. With heartfelt condolences to his family and to all who knew him . . .
