Rick was my graduate school advisor/mentor at the University of Maine from 1992-1996. He spent many, many hours talking with me, guiding me, and mentoring me.
As we were considering topics and approaches for my dissertation, he told me a story about his graduate school experience. He said he and another graduate student aimed to come up with a new, innovative research idea. They decided to lock themselves in a room and remain until they thought of the idea. The idea didn't come and they didn't remain in the room. Reflecting on that experience with me, he made the point that it's through consideration of past research and past ideas that new and innovative ideas and programs of research are generated. It's a point that has been foundational for me in my life. It's led me to seek collaboration in my work as a high school principal and in my relationships with my wife, daughters, and friends.
Rick inspired me to grow as a student, thinker, and public speaker. He was an incredible graduate school advisor. But his influence on me as a man and human being was (and is) most profound. Through his example, he taught me that we, as men, can be communicative and emotional. While maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, he engendered a personal connection with me from the moment I met him. He taught me that, in the end, our relationships are the center of our worlds. He showed me that integrity, honesty, compassion, and love are virtues we ought to all embrace and make manifest.
I miss Rick and will hold him in my heart for the remainder of my life.
