Remembering Roberta

We "met" Roberta by phone on New Year's Day in 1973 when she called us at our home in New York City to respond to a query we'd sent about renting Dutton Cottage.  She said, over and over, "there's nothing much to do here," "town is about five miles away and most of the road is dirt."  She must have thought we were very used to brights lights and big city ways.  We came for three weeks in August with our two year old son who was still in cloth diapers: no hot water, raccoons scavenging on the back porch every evening, and, contrary to her description, a world of things to do.  Before we left that summer, we reserved Dutton Cottage for the whole month of the following August.  We made it a tradition every summer, adding another son who came every summer of his life until 1993 when we were able to move into our own house not far away.  We loved visiting Roberta after she moved into her family home in Steuben.  Our boys were fascinated by the huge pine cones in her fireplaces, her Downeast accent, and whatever dog she had living with her at the time. We would catch up with her on news of the area and her plans for Dutton Cottage.  She was always adding a new amenity like hot water and mourning the burden of taxes that she found crippling. She even visited us in New York when she came for a vacation.  She was absolutely shocked by the price of an ice cream cone and couldn't imagine how anyone could afford to live in such an expensive place!  A gracious, elegant but unassuming person, Roberta lived her long life well.  She will always be beloved in the memories of our family.
